LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE

" ... mental activity for older people is more important than even income or housing."

Dr. James Birren

...its history

In January 1982, a new idea came into being.  A group of older adults gathered together seeking "stimulation of the mind".  They were convinced that they could learn, if the subjects were of interest and presented at the right time of day.

Thus began the process of developing and designing intellectual and educational courses that would meet this need.  This led to the creation of the Centre's Lifelong Learning Institute.  It encompasses an organization of older learners interested in enriching their lives by gaining a greater understanding of the world in which they live.

...the present

Today, the Bernard Betel Centre's Lifelong Learning Institute offers members:

·         a Tuesday afternoon Book Club;

·         two Friday creative writing workshops;

·         Discussion groups on bible study and current events, and Jewish culture

  • Beginner level Russian language programs;
  • dozens of exciting and stimulating lecture series throughout the year. These lectures vary in length. Some take place on a single day, while others consist of several classes. The lectures are presented by distinguished professors, authors, rabbis and artists. All provide room for questions and discussions.
  • Music Appreciation programs focusing on concerts, opera, Broadway, Classical, Jewish music, etc.;
  • Stories from the Heart one Thursday a month. Stories are shared of family, careers, travel, children, etc.

...its goals

The Lifelong Learning Institute's goals are to:

  • to provide intellectual, cultural and educational activities in a comfortable and non threatening environment;
  • to provide opportunities for learning knowledge;
  • to foster independence and creativity by using the skills of the older learners to develop courses which they see as relevant;
  • meet others with similar interests;
  • encourage learning as a lifelong experience.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS FORUM

This forum sponsors lively debates on current topics of interest.  The group meets every other Monday morning in our on-site Library.

These forums provide an excellent opportunity for older adults to become educated on issues public policy issues concerning them.  Some of the discussions prompt letter writing and petitions to all levels of government advocating on behalf of seniors living in the community.  Given that the number of aging seniors is expected to climb well into the coming decades, seniors realize that their voices will be heard.
