Our recreational department is comprised of: arts & crafts, dance, games, intergenerational events, performing groups, special events, travel & day trips and clubs.  You will be pleasantly surprised to find out that there is something for everyone! ARTS & CRAFTS The Centre hosts three different types of arts & crafts programs.  Knitting, painting, and pottery courses run four times a year, from nine to twelve weeks in duration, meeting once a week.  Classes are led by qualified teachers and provide individualized instruction in a supportive and relaxed atmosphere. [Top of the page] DANCES No partners are necessary to participate in any of our programs which include Belly Dancing, Line Dancing, and Israeli Dancing.  All classes are led by qualified instructors.  Classes are held four times a year, from nine to twelve weeks in duration, meeting once a week.   [Top of the page] GAMES A number of groups meet once a week for bingo, chess, mah jong, open bridge and other card games. The game groups are generally FREE (Bingo $1) to members of the Bernard Betel Centre while non-members can access bingo and bridge for a nominal charge.  A "Bridge for Beginners" course is also available.  [Top of the page] INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAMS A Vice Principal at a local school was once quoted as saying: "Seniors know all about children because they were once children.  Children have a lot to learn from seniors because they have never been seniors." Help us break down generation gaps by joining our social gatherings with children from local elementary, secondary and post secondary institutions to promote understanding between generations and to dismiss stereotypes.   [Top of the page] PERFORMING GROUPS Who ever said seniors can't act?  In fact, performing groups happen to be a popular activity for our members.  We continuously seek out new talent in any one of the four performing groups at the Centre: · Creative Choir; · Creative Musical Variety; · Drama Group and  · International Choir [Top of the page] SPECIAL EVENTS The Bernard Betel Centre hosts a number of special events every year. In addition to Valentine's Day, Mothers Day and Fathers Day celebrations, our annual Canada Day and Open House celebrations (in the summer) are always great events.   We invite and encourage the entire community to attend these events and to learn more about the Centre and get to meet new people.  [Top of the page] TRAVEL & DAY TRIPS Travel and Day Trips brochure We offer organized day trips and the occasional overnight tour accompanied by trained volunteers.  We aim to offer at least one excursion monthly between March to October. In the past, our members and seniors in the community have enjoyed the sights and sounds of Ottawa, Muskoka, Montreal, Quebec City, Florida, Palm Springs, San Diego, Catskills Mountains and Washington D.C.  Each year new and exciting venues are explored and new destinations planned. Our day-trips are one day excursions and can include cruises, theatre, Casino hopping, sightseeing, antique shopping and other activities. Our day-trip program offers seniors a chance to get out of town for a day. Our day-trip committee has even developed a series of in-town trips to discover or rediscover Toronto. In previous years, our members, led by trained staff and volunteers, have led outings to Western Canada, Atlantic Canada, Chicago, Branson Missouri. One of our members who came on a wine-tasting and sightseeing tour was overheard saying, "I guess I enjoyed sampling the wine a little too much because I slept through the sightseeing part." The tour and day-trip programs are planned and implemented by a committee of members at the Bernard Betel Centre for Creative Living. OUR POLICY ON TRAVEL AND DAY TRIPS: Membership cards MUST be shown when purchasing tickets; Members are permitted to purchase two (2) tickets as long as quantities last; Non members are welcomed to register at a slightly higher rate after five (5) business days the tickets have gone on sale for as long as quantities last; A notice of cancellation must be given at least five business days before a trip to receive a refund. A $ 5.00 cancellation charge will apply on all cancelled trips. There will be NO refund after the deadline. Non-members and members alike will be required to fill out an information form before each trip. Your trip receipt is non-transferable without permission. We regret that we cannot wait for latecomers, because of our busy trip schedule. Latecomers will not be reimbursed. Furthermore, the Bernard Betel Centre for Creative Living reserves the right to deny participation in our day-trip and tour programs. A release form must be signed before each trip commences. [Top of the page] SUNDAY PROGRAMS Sunday programs consist of bingo, card playing, chess and a movie screening. [Top of the page] SYNAGOGUE SERVICES The synagogue is located inside the Centre and is available to our members and others in and outside the community. Shabbat morning services are from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon, followed by a Kiddush.  [Top of the page] COST The price set for an activity is dependant upon a number of variables: · member/ non member · cost of program supplies · cost of instruction · length of activity (i.e. number of hours and weeks offered) A number of members only programs are FREE. Courses are $ 2.00 per instructional hour for members and $ 4.00 per hour for non-members.
